Room Thermostats

Let's Check Your Room Thermostat

Room ThermostatAll the tests on room thermostats have been done with placement in the sitting room, so why is it often placed in the hall?

BEAMA is the industry body that represents manufacturers of heating controls. They list places that a room thermostat should not be fixed as follows:

  • In a room with another major heat source, such as an open fire, gas fire or cooker.
  • In a room fitted with radiator thermostats
  • In direct sunlight
  • Behind furniture or curtains
  • In a cold draught, such as next to a frequently opened door
  • Directly above a radiator or other heat source, including heat-emitting electrical appliances such as a TV or computer
  • In the corner of two walls
  • In a corner at the junction of the wall and ceiling.

So, in answer to the question above, the hall may be the only place that complies with the criteria.

Mobile wireless room thermostats really help

Wireless Room ThermostatThis room thermostat is fixed to the wall.

Another way of dealing with the issue is to have a battery powered wireless room thermostat which can be easily moved. Then you can put the fire on in the living room or spend time elsewhere and still have efficient heating for the whole house.

Freestanding Room ThermostatThis room thermostat comes with its own stand and a plate that allows fixing to the wall. You can use it as you wish.

You must adjust the TRVs when you move the room thermostat, otherwise placement is based on where you are. Fixing the room thermostat to the wall almost anywhere will sometimes partly disable it.

A mobile room thermostat will also help you calibrate your TRVs accurately. This is really important if you need to save money on fuel.

It is battery powered and has wireless communication with the boiler, so it can be removed from the wall and used as a mobile room thermostat if you wish.
